Aalto Bio Reagents Launches Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) Monoclonal Antibody

AACC, Chicago, USA – July 30th 2018 - Aalto Bio Reagents is delighted to announce availability of its new rat monoclonal antibody to free DHT. DHT is an androgen that is synthesized from testosterone, by the action of 5α-reductase, in select tissues such as the prostate gland, testes, hair follicles, and adrenal glands. It is essential for the development of the male sex characteristics during embryogenesis and puberty, as well as the maintenance of the prostate gland and seminal vesicles. DHT is also present in women but to a lesser degree.

In addition to normal biological functions, DHT plays a causative role in a number of androgen-dependent conditions including hair conditions like hirsutism (excessive facial/body hair growth) and pattern hair loss (androgenic alopecia or pattern baldness), as well as prostate diseases such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer.

In Klinefelter’s syndrome the DHT level is much lower than that found in normal men whereas in idiopathic hirsutism about 40% of the patients have an increased level of DHT. The quantitative measurement of DHT in serum is therefore of significant clinical importance. “This exciting launch today marks the first in a series of dynamic new products coming down the line enabling our customers to bring superior, differentiating end-products to market faster” said CEO, Philip Noone.
